Module 5 Artifacts

Gibbs Free Energy

The above is a visual representation of the Gibbs-Free Energy Equation. I created this when we were discussing the meanings and philosophical implications of various equations in Thermodynamics in Module 5. The words drawn around the different symbols are words that come to mind when I look at this equation - ideas of absolute zero, standard temperature in Kelvin, and just some other thoughts. To me, this equation that represents the amount of energy available in a system really has much more meaning that just symbols on a page. It's fascinating to me that in order to describe the physical world around us, we create symbols and expressions that not only can be shared with other humans to increase understanding, but also define physical and natural occurrences in the universe. I chose to draw this equation specifically as I learned about it recently in CHGN 122, but also because it peaks my intrigue regarding our use of equations to understand the universe.

The Arrow of Time

This illustration depicts the idea of a 'Thermodynamic Arrow of Time', highlighted by Stephen Hawking in "A Brief History of the Universe". The first progression of time in the forward direction (noted by the positive change in Entropy above the arrow) shows a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket lifting off. This can be described further by the release of energy from an organized state to a chaotic state; chemical potential energy being converted to kinetic energy. However in the reverse direction, Time itself can be said to be moving backwards, because the change in Entropy of the universe is negative. Energy is flowing from a chaotic state in the exhaust plumes back into an ordered state stored in the tanks of the rocket. This example and the idea of the arrow of time in general are both vastly interesting to me, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to have dived deeper and explored more in this last module.

Entropic Flight of Life: M5 Final Project

Reflection on M5

I am very happy with my choice of being in Studio Caster for this final module. I feel that I was very much able to explore topics and concepts and ideas that all connected to the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, and all truly peaked my interest. I feel that I have definitely gotten a lot out of this module, and I generally feel an increase in the capacity to think about, observe, and discuss the 2nd Law and Entropy itself. Choosing this module has allowed me to end off this year digging deep and exploring more of what really interests me, and I'm very happy with my final project efforts as well.

This piano piece has a somewhat minor feel, but major Bb chords chime through at different parts throughout. This represents a glimpse through stress and anxiety to what I originally felt at the beginning of this year in IDEAS. The desire to explore and learn and take every opportunity to further my knowledge of different topics began to come back during module 5. On my Intellectual Journey, this module has been a huge contributor in bringing back my desire to pursue my passions and things that interest me, and this song represents a turning page into the conclusion of this year in IDEAS.
